Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is a condition usually caused by the bacteria found in plaque that damages the soft tissue that supports your teeth. This bacteria eating away at the soft tissues in your mouth will eventually cause your teeth to loosen, your gums to recede, and you can experience irritation, inflammation, and risk for infection if left untreated.
Signs of Gum Disease
Some signs to watch out for that could signal periodontal disease are gums that are swollen, red, tender, or bleed easily. You may also experience tooth loss, bad breath that doesn’t go away, receding gums, and sensitivity when you chew. If you are concerned that you may have periodontal disease, then please come visit our office. We can examine your teeth and determine the health of your teeth and potentially necessary treatment for periodontal disease.
Periodontal Disease Treatment
Everyone experiences gum disease differently, so your treatment can vary depending on what your teeth specifically need. Depending on whether your periodontal disease is minor or more severe, we may recommend additional treatment and lifestyle changes. This can include additional teeth cleanings, better oral hygiene habits at home, prescription antibiotics, deep cleanings (scaling/root planing), and gum surgery. Our goal is to restore your healthy smile and stop the progression of the disease. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to call our office. We are here for you, to take care of you and your smile!
